Government vs. Commercial Pillars
The modern landscape is supported by two primary pillars: Government Agencies and Commercial Companies. While their goals often overlap, their core missions differ significantly.
Today’s landscape is divided into two primary sectors. Government organizations like NASA and ESA focus on long-term exploration and high-level research, exemplified by the Artemis program. Meanwhile, commercial leaders like SpaceX and Axiom Space have moved from contractors to operational leaders, providing transportation and even managing their own missions. Axiom Space manages private missions to the ISS and is currently building its own commercial space station to succeed it. The Artemis program is the flagship of government exploration, aiming to return humans to the Moon and eventually reach Mars.

Professional Astronauts vs. Participants
Crossing the Kármán line doesn't mean everyone has the same job. We must distinguish between Professional Astronauts and Spaceflight Participants.
Not everyone in space has the same job. Professional Astronauts, whether government ASCANs or Axiom specialists, are highly trained career individuals responsible for piloting and complex EVAs. Conversely, Spaceflight Participants are often paying guests. While they undergo safety training, they do not hold primary operational responsibility for the spacecraft.
