Integrating Capture for Software Simulations

Capture: The Cloud-Native Advantage

For Storyline users, Capture represents a major shift. Instead of heavy video files, it creates HTML5-based steps that are natively integrated into the Claro cloud ecosystem.

Welcome! If you're coming from Articulate Storyline, you're used to a desktop-bound recording process. Capture changes the game by being a cloud-integrated application. It records software tasks as efficient HTML5 steps rather than heavy video files, and unlike Storyline, it offers full support for macOS users without needing a virtual machine.

The Multi-Mode Philosophy

Capture's most powerful feature is 'Record Once, Publish Many'. A single recording can be deployed in five distinct ways.

In Storyline, you often have to choose your mode before recording. With Capture, you record once and then choose how to deploy it. You can use it as a 'Show Me' animation, a 'Try Me' interactive practice, or a 'Guide Me' job aid. For assessment, use 'Practice' mode for no-stakes learning or 'Test Me' for a scored LMS result. Try Me is an interactive practice mode where the learner is guided through each step with instructions. Show Me provides an automated, HTML-based animation of the steps, perfect for a quick overview. Test Me is a fully scored simulation. It tracks every click and reports the final score directly to your LMS. Guide Me generates a step-by-step list, making it an ideal digital job aid for quick reference. Practice mode allows learners to try the software without hints, providing a safe space for self-assessment.

Scenario: Recording a CRM Update

Walk through the process of launching Capture from within a Claro project to record a task.

Let's practice the workflow. Imagine you're building a CRM training. First, you'll need to add a simulation placeholder. Click on the 'All Elements' tab. Now, click 'Open Capture'. Notice how the app launches separately. As you perform the CRM task, Capture automatically identifies buttons and text fields. Once you save, it's immediately in your project library—no manual importing needed! Great. Now scroll to the Record section and select 'New Simulation'. This places the placeholder on your stage.

Refining and Integrating

Once recorded, you can refine hotspots and set the behavior within your Claro page options.

After recording, you can fine-tune the results. Use the Capture editor to adjust hotspot sizes or add Secondary Hotspots for branching paths. Back in Claro, simply select your placeholder and use the Options tab to set the behavior, such as 'Try Me', for that specific page.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

Ensure a smooth recording by following these best practices for resolution and permissions.

Before you start your first recording, let's look at three common traps. Click each icon to learn how to avoid them. Don't over-edit. Capture's auto-detection is highly accurate. Trust the tool to identify buttons first, then refine only if necessary. Resolution mismatch! If your recording window doesn't match your Claro project's aspect ratio, you'll get black bars. Always align your window size first. Mac users, take note! You must explicitly grant 'Screen Recording' and 'Accessibility' permissions in System Settings, or Capture won't be able to log your clicks.
