The 6-Step Framework

The CompTIA Troubleshooting Methodology is the industry standard for solving technical problems. Following these steps in order ensures you don't miss simple fixes while chasing complex ones.

To be successful in the 220-1201 and 1202 exams, you must memorize these six steps. First, Identify the problem. Second, Establish a theory of probable cause. Third, Test the theory. Fourth, Establish a plan and implement the solution. Fifth, Verify full system functionality. And finally, Document findings, actions, and outcomes.

Step 1: Identify the Problem

Before touching the hardware, you must gather information. Ask Sarah about recent changes or environmental factors. Don't forget to perform backups if possible!

Let's start with Step 1. You're at Sarah's desk. Before you start swapping parts, you need to talk to her. Try to find out what changed recently. Type your questions to Sarah below.

Step 2 & 3: Theory and Testing

Now that you know Sarah moved her desk, it's time to Question the Obvious. Is the PSU (Power Supply Unit) plugged in? Is the power strip on?

Based on Sarah's info, your theory is a loose cable. In Step 2, you establish this theory. In Step 3, you test it. Click the power cable to see if it's seated correctly. There it is!
